Local notes from the Færð og Veður team
Heading east, the Ring Road crosses Mývatns- og Möðrudalsöræfi — high, exposed moorland and one of the sections of Route 1 most often closed in winter storms. When it closes there is no short way round to Egilsstaðir.
Westbound to Akureyri, the Ring Road goes through the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, which has a toll, instead of the old Víkurskarð pass.
Route 87 to Húsavík crosses Hólasandur, which has limited winter service.
