Reykjanesbraut (Route 41) is a dual carriageway with daily winter service, and the road conditions are rarely the problem. It does close in the worst storms — when it does, flights are usually affected too, so check your airline as well.
The road crosses open lava fields with almost no shelter. In winter the usual issues are strong crosswind and blowing snow reducing visibility, more than the road surface.
