Local notes from the Færð og Veður team
Mosfellsheiði (Route 36) is the first climb out of Reykjavík and one of the higher parts of the loop. Check it before you leave town, not when you reach Þingvellir.
Lyngdalsheiði (Route 365), the link from Þingvellir to Laugarvatn, crosses open moorland and can ice over before the lower roads do. The lower way to Geysir and Gullfoss is Route 35 north from Selfoss, though from Reykjavík you still cross Hellisheiði or Þrengsli to get there.
Gullfoss and its car park are exposed. In strong wind, hold car doors firmly with both hands — doors bent by gusts are a common rental-car claim in Iceland.
